In a ceremony held on Saturday in Jorhat, Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a towering statue honoring Lachit Borphukan.
The 125-foot tall statue, named the “Statue of Valour,” is located at the Lachit Barphukan Maidam Development Project in Hollongapar. Clad in traditional attire, Modi participated in an Ahom ritual before unveiling the impressive structure. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma joined the Prime Minister for the event.
Sculpted by Ram Vanji Sutar, the statue itself stands at 84 feet tall and rests on a 41-foot pedestal. Lachit Borphukan, a legendary commander of the Ahom kingdom (1228-1826), is celebrated for his leadership in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat, a pivotal victory that thwarted the Mughal Empire’s attempt to reclaim Assam.
