The Election Commission of India (ECI) has released the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections 2024, revealing that the polls will be conducted in seven phases spanning from April 19 to June 1. The results of the elections are slated to be declared on June 4, as announced by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on March 16 in the national capital.
According to Kumar, the first phase of voting for 102 parliamentary constituencies will commence on April 19, encompassing 21 states and union territories. Subsequent phases will follow, with the second phase covering 89 constituencies on April 26, the third phase for 94 constituencies on May 7, and the fourth phase for 96 seats on May 13. The fifth phase will take place on May 20, covering 49 seats, followed by the sixth phase on May 25, involving 57 parliamentary constituencies. The seventh and final phase is scheduled for June 1, with 57 seats up for voting.
With the announcement of the poll dates, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has been enforced immediately. The Election Commission has issued directives for swift and stringent enforcement of the MCC during the initial 72 hours following the election schedule announcement, as well as maintaining heightened vigilance and strict enforcement action during the final 72 hours leading up to the close of polls.
Furthermore, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar revealed that senior citizens aged 85 years and above, as well as persons with disabilities, will have the option to opt for postal ballots and cast their votes from their homes. As of March 10, 2024, there are 81,87,999 senior citizen electors above 85 years and 2,18,442 electors above 100 years in the country.
