Dhoni Steps Down, Gaikwad Steps Up: A New Era for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) announced a change in leadership for the upcoming IPL season. Legendary captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has stepped down, passing the torch to Ruturaj Gaikwad.

“MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period,” CSK said in a statement on its website.

Gaikwad will begin the Indian Premier League 2024 season as Captian, confirmed IPL via a tweet through social media platform X.

Gaikwad has become a vital cog in the Chennai Super Kings machinery since joining the team in 2020. He’s racked up a total of 52 appearances for the franchise. The last IPL season was a breakout year for Gaikwad. He amassed an impressive 590 runs in just 16 matches, showcasing his aggressive batting style with a scorching strike rate of 147.50. Gaikwad’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed. He’s already earned international experience, representing India in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 (T20) matches, adding further weight to his leadership potential.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s leadership has been synonymous with success for the Chennai Super Kings. Under his captaincy, CSK lifted the coveted IPL trophy a record-tying five times (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023). This accomplishment placed them on par with the Mumbai Indians, another powerhouse team in the league. His influence extends beyond the IPL, having led India to prestigious victories in major ICC tournaments.
